Distillation Tower

Overview

This was executed on an extremely tight schedule as it was an emergency replacement and not a planned one.

Our scope included drawing preparation and FEA analysis of the tower in transportation condition. In transportation condition both Barge (3 saddles) and Truck (2 saddles) modes were analyzed as both modes would be used in the transportation.

The Extractive Distillation Tower is designed to ASME Sec. VIII Div. 1, Edition 2023. The vertical column has is supported on a conical skirt 24 ft tall, with an overall vessel height of 267 ft & diameter of 10 ft 6inches. There are a large number of internal trays which add to the empty equipment weight of 280 tonnes. Considering the sizing and limitations of LP Zick method, finite element analysis is performed to compute induced stresses in vessel and saddle to shell support junction under shipping conditions per ASME Sec. VIII Div. 2, Part 5.

Induced stresses in vessel & saddle to shell junction for truck and inland barge mode of transportation were evaluated to be within allowable limits with deformation acceptable from practical consideration.
